Finally got solid recall after 6 months of work - here is what actually helped
I see so many posts about recall struggles so I wanted to share what finally worked for us. My aussie went from completely ignoring me at the dog park to coming back 95% of the time even with distractions.
What actually worked:
1. High value treats - I'm talking real chicken, cheese, hot dogs. Not kibble. The treats have to be better than whatever they're distracted by.
2. Started inside the house with zero distractions. Didn't go outside until he was perfect inside.
3. NEVER called him for something bad. No "come" before baths, nail trims, leaving the park. I'd go get him instead.
4. Long line (30 ft) at the park for months before trusting off leash.
5. Random recall practice during walks even when there's nothing wrong. Come = party every single time.
The biggest thing was patience. It took way longer than I expected but its so worth it now.
